Following closely on the Joint Chiefs tacit endorsement of Obama’s suggestion of possible military action against insurgents in Pakistan, the New York Times: “Bush Said to Give Orders Allowing Raids in Pakistan.”
Remember, John McCain called this strategy “naive.” I’ll be back a bit later to describe why it’s not naive.
Not that this election is about issues, but in a fantasy land where it were, it turns out the Joint Chiefs support Obama’s thinking on Afghanistan.
WASHINGTON – A top Pentagon official conceded Wednesday that coalition forces are not winning the battle against an increasingly deadly insurgency in Afghanistan, adding that the U.S. would revise its strategy for the region to include militant safe havens in neighboring Pakistan.
Here’s Obama, in Febuary:
“There are terrorists holed up in those mountains [of Pakistan] who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again,” he will say. “It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al Qaeda leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets, and [then Pakistani President] Musharraf won’t act, we will.”
