to follow up on what you're saying, IIRC, right before the 1992 election, some guy wrote an article called 'Demoschlerosis', that made the case that these special interests' control over politics and policy need to be reduced. He spent a great deal of time discussing how they latch onto the government and leach money from the public.

He then made the reccomendation that if you could limit the dollar amount of the government budget they have access to, you would begin to kill them off by making them compete with each other.

Another thing that would help would be to ressurrect the constitutional amendment to create a line-item veto that the Congress failed to pass in the 1990s.

And taxpayers would be less enthusiastic for EVERYTHING if they knew that 5% of the annual budget is just for paying off interest on the national debt.

$3.55 trillion dollar budget FY 2010 / 138 million taxpayers * 0.05 = $1286.20

====

The link below has a nice budget breakdown:
http://useconomy.about.com/od/fiscalpolicy/p/Budget_Spending.htm

In the words of Milton Friedman, "The debts must equal the receipts." Because mandatory spending is increasing due to the large number of baby boomers retiring, we will likely see the percentage of the budget allocated to discretionary spending decrease over the next five years.

Jon, what are your thoughts?

That said, it seems the public option that’s emerging from the Senate really won’t be the fantastic price control mechanism reformers hoped for.

No doubt because, with the 'opt-out' in place, the plan isn't likely to achieve the critical mass necessary to give it the clout required to force cost controls. (JMHO)

I have noticed that some bloggers are questioning whether we should continue to have a Senate, partly because of the filibuster. I just wrote a post on the U.S. Senate itself. I argue that it was designed with discordant goals and that it should be more like the European Council in the EU in representing State governments. Here is the link (in case you are interested): http://euandus3.wordpress.com/2009/10/27/the-u-s-senate-what-is-it-really/
