So Amy, inviting a conversation over at umcanwetalkaboutthis, gags with disgust at two new dating sites geared for the money hungry and money possessing:
Seeking Arrangement, the “Elite Sugar Daddy Dating Site”, promotes “mutually beneficial relationships” where one party is usually “an older and wealthy individual who gives a young person expensive gifts or financial assistance in return for friendship, or intimacy.”
I appreciate the fact that they’re open with their intentions, but at the same time, it’s pretty pathetic that people would sign up for this. Not to mention the fact that if said “relationship” works out, then you are forced to tell people you met on a website designed for narcissists.
Their sister site, Seeking Millionaire, is ”a millionaire dating & elite matchmaking personals for rich, wealthy, classy, affluent, gorgeous, attractive & beautiful singles.” Gag.
Now, far be it for me to claim this sort of thing is healthy, but I have to take issue with the assertion that these sites are designed for narcissists. At least in a strict sense, narcissists are known for an unhealthy obsessional love of their own visage, or perhaps more broadly, just a love of self. People tend to like what they know, and if you really are a rich, wealthy, classy, affluent, gorgeous, attractive, beautiful single, what’s so wrong with looking for equally rich, wealthy, classy, affluent, gorgeous, attractive, and beautiful singles? What if you really like the idea of providing for someone? Isn’t that just one of X things that might be of romantic interest to you — is it any fundamentally different than jdate? The site alleges to offer “mutually beneficial relationships”, just like any other niche dating site.
Now, as I said before, I don’t think this type of thing is especially healthy, insofar as it really obliterates blurs the line between dating and prostitution, but that’s an issue for another day.
